Billy Packer, known by his legal name as Anthony William Packer was an American sportscaster and a published author. Packer spent more than three decades as a colour analyst for television coverage of college basketball.

Anthony William Paczkowski, the father of Packer, was born in Wellsville, New York. The Polish surname Paczkowski was later changed to Packer by his parents. At St. Lawrence University, his father Tony was a standout football, basketball, and baseball player who was elected into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1982.

During his 35 years at Lehigh, Tony coached the men’s basketball team for 16 seasons, from 1950 to 1966. Packer attended Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and graduated from there.

He was a guard for the basketball team at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from 1958 to 1962 (freshmen were not allowed to participate in varsity sports at the time), helping Wake to two Atlantic Coast Conference championships and the 1962 Final Four.

He belonged to the Sigma Chi fraternity’s Delta Nu chapter. He briefly served as his alma mater’s assistant coach after graduating.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, Packer started his broadcasting career in 1972 after being asked to step in as the color analyst for an ACC game that was being broadcast locally. The following season, Packer was a regular.
